As 2024 draws to a close and we start to look forward to 2025 and all the excitement and challenges this will bring, Mark, Fiona, and Derek would like to wish all our clients and friends the best for 2025.
After the boisterous, high-demand, low-supply, post-covid yacht brokerage market, 2024 was the year in which activity and prices returned to something approaching normality. At the end of 2023, we reported on the softening of the market in general, and this theme continued through 2024. Those boats priced to reflect the new market environment found steady interest levels and new buyers relatively quickly. The General Election and the doom and gloom of the following budget saw enquiry levels and general sales activity drop off during the summer months. However, the autumn and later months of the year have seen a marked uplift in enquiry levels and sales activity, with a flurry of sales concluding through November and December.
Throughout 2024, we have had to negotiate a world of vastly increasing business costs as many third-party marketing platforms used across the industry increase their pricing by eye-watering percentages with little notice. As most UK-based brokerages have adjusted their marketing activities, we have followed suit, changing some of the third-party websites we use to market our listings. We continue to re-invest, spreading our marketing spend across various marketing platforms and developing our own YouTube channel to complement our other marketing activities.
BREXIT continues to be an area of concern for boat buyers and sellers. During 2024, we assisted several owners who bought vessels during the market’s peak, post-BREXIT, without receiving the correct paperwork. While this is relatively easy to resolve at this stage, it will become an increasing issue that is almost impossible to solve with time. We urge all owners to ensure they have sufficient evidence to show that the vessel was lying in the UK during BREXIT. As a business, we will continue to provide support to resolve these issues.
2025 will be a year which presents the yachting market with some real challenges. With lots of uncertainty in the UK economy and several changes relating to the taxation of personal wealth, we don’t expect to see a surge in the value of boats and, in general, expect a quieter market. We will continue to invest our resources sensibly and work hard to achieve results for our clients with well-presented and sensibly priced boats of all sizes.
