One of three yachts built to this iconic Michael Pocock design (Design No.P33); ARABESQUE is the only example built in composite wood epoxy, the other two being built in aluminium (AL SHAHEEN and SADKO). All three originally built for very experienced members of the Royal Cruising Club and/or the Ocean Cruising Club; following the success of the larger composite wood epoxy constructed Pocock 45 BROWN BEAR. The original design brief was create a safe, comfortable and extremely capable yacht for her owners to go cruising without the requirement for scores of berths (although she will happily sleep six).
Her two year build was undertaken by MB Yachts in Dorset who are renowned for their custom one-off yacht construction and refit/restorations on yachts such as the 57ft S&S ‘ARGYLL’, The use of composite construction allowed for a light, stiff and incredibly well insulated hull, whilst her GRP moulded deck and superstructure (an extremely expensive process for a one-off build) allows for far better ergonomics than a wood-epoxy construction would allow in this area.
Her hull shape is reminiscent of a Bowman 42 or Malo, with a forgiving deep-V hull shape, long fin keel and well supported rudder. Coupled with a powerful yet easily-managed sloop rig, complete with twin furling foresails and a fully-battened mainsail, she sails beautifully on all points and in all conditions.
Below decks, she really impresses, with stunning Brazilian Mahogany joinery, luxurious Corian counters and hard-wearing Alcantara upholstery throughout. Add in a comprehensive, yet uncomplicated inventory and you have all the ingredients for a stress-free and thoroughly capable blue water cruiser capable of taking her owners anywhere.
First launched in 2004 and in only her second caring ownership since new, the time has come for this extremely special ocean cruising yacht to find a new custodian.

Having owned a couple of production yachts over the years, five years ago we set out to find a yacht to sail anywhere, lightly crewed, comfortable and stylish. We found ARABESQUE. Perfect for a couple wanting to sail long distances- and occasionally entertain 10 for dinner in some style.In the four years of ownership we have spent three outside the UK, wintering in Bilbao, La Corunna and Cartagena.
She is admired wherever we go and has sailing abilities to match. A solid and comfortable up-wind performer, surprisingly good in light winds whilst under twin foresails and main, down-wind off the Portuguese coast she was in her element. We couldn’t wait to get into the trade winds to the Caribbean and beyond. However, changing family circumstances now mean catering for grandchildren rather than extended cruising and we have sadly decided to find a new owner for ARABESQUE who will make the most of her many unique, go anywhere qualities.
As a yacht constructed and placed in use within EU waters after the 16‘" June 1998, it is our understanding that she is therefore compliant with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/255 C (Recreational Craft Directive)
Shell constructed of 25mm epoxy glued western red cedar with additional 25mm mahogany strip planking to more heavily loaded area along centreline.
Hardwood stringers to port and starboard.
External keel stub, deadwood and internal keel floors in solid mahogany, epoxy glass skinned.
Hull shell skinned with laminates of biaxial glass reinforced epoxy resin.
Main bulkheads and rig attachment structure in 18mm marine ply epoxy resin filleted and bonded in with glass reinforced resin.
Secondary bulkheads in 15mm plywood epoxy resin filleted and bonded where necessary.
Topsides finished in two pack polyurethane paint with contrasting boot top, cheatline and simulated caveat line.
Underwater surfaces painted with epoxy primer prior to application of antifoul.
Deck & Superstructure Construction:
Cored construction of glass reinforced polyester resin with 18mm thick end grain balsa in side decks, foredecks, seats and cockpit sole, elsewhere generally 12mm thick balsa core.
Plywood inserts in way of all deck fittings and additional laminate over.
The coachroof and cockpit are moulded inside female moulds.
Sidedecks and foredeck moulded separately and joined to form continuous structure.
Deck assembly filled, faired and painted with two-pack polyeurethane incorporating non-slip finishes where appropriate.
The deck is attached to the hull with glass reinforced resin around the deck edge and in way of the main bulkheads.
The cockpit is self-draining with a large locker to starboard and helmsman seat with liferaft stowage beneath, and a self-draining gas bottle locker outboard.
Cockpit coaming and bulwark capped in solid teak.
Cockpit seating, sole and bridge deck are laid with 10mm teak decking.
Keel & Rudder:
Ballast keel in cast iron, bolted onto external stub/deadwood and through keel floors with stainless steel bolts.
Keel skimmed with glass reinforced epoxy resin.
3/4 depth rudder skeg and shaft fairing in glass reinforced epoxy resin.
Rudder with 6omm diameter stainless steel stock fabrication, foam filled with epoxy glass skins.
Rudder tube in epoxy glass with journal bearings, thrust washer, roller bearings and seal – Rudder bearing replaced 2017
Skeg and rudder tube heavily braced with fabricated stainless steel structure.
