Designed and built by Morgan Giles in Teignmouth TILLY III was the result of a commission from the then Lord Devonport for a capable offshore racing yacht a role which she proved more than capable of fulfilling. Using then state of the art design and construction principles TILLY III was something of benchmark design in the 1950's and although a one-off design many of the elements found there way into subsequent designs.
With only her third owners since being built TILLY III was found by the current owners following an extended lay-up and in need of some TLC. Having the skill (being a time served boat builder) the current owner embarked upon a four year hull up restoration of the boat which saw her stripped back to a bare hull and deck structure before being completely rebuilt. Since being relaunched she has completed more than 8000 miles of cruising exploring waters from La Rochelle to the Pentland Firth!
With the asking price just reduced by £10,000 TILLY III is an excellent opportunity to acquire a lovely classic yacht, recently restored to the highest standards and ready to sail away. Lying in Oban, Argyll viewing is strictly by appointment.
The boat was designed and built by Morgan Giles of Teignmouth using then state of the art design and construction techniques.
The hull is of carvel construction being Mahogany planking on Oak frames secured using copper clench fastenings. The lead ballast keel is secured to the timber keel with bronze keel bolts, these are reported to have been X-Rayed in 1990 and confirmed to be in good condition.
Sitting on oak deck beams the deck has been completely renewed as part of the restoration. The sub-deck being of 9mm marine grade plywood. A a 3/8" traditional teak laid deck is fitted on top of the sub deck. Coachroof sides are of solid Mahognay with a traditional varnish finish.
Details of Restoration
Following a period of neglect TILLY III was purchased by the current owner; a time served boat builder, in the year 2000 and was then the subject of an extensive re-fit project. Fully restored the boat was relaunched in 2004. Details of the restorations works are summarised as:
- New marine grade plywood sub-deck.
- New teak laid deck, planking of 3/8" thickness.
- New hull planking in various areas, in way of skin fittings each plank was replaced completely.
- Various replacement Oak ribs.
- Cockpit re-built in a traditional style to be self-draining.
- Rudder removed, minor repairs completed, epoxy primed and re-fitted.
- Hull epoxy splined before being epoxy primed and painted with Awlgrip two-pack paint system.
- Ballast keel sandblasted.
- All through hull skin fitting replaced with Bronze items
- All chainplates removed inspected and re-fitted with new stainless steel fastenings.
- Deck gear and cleats removed, replaced as required and re-fitted with new fastenings.
- All chrome fittings removed and re-chromed before re-fitting with new fastenings.
- All bright work stripped back to bare timber before being re-coated.
Spars and Rigging
- Interior completely stripped out to bare hull leaving just 3 main bulkheads.
- All timber work stripped back to bare before being primed and painted.
- All structural metal work (hanging knees, floors, etc) removed, re-galvanised and then powder coated before re-fitting.
- New stainless steel bilge floors fitted.
- New Oak engine bearers fitted.
- All new electrical systems and plumbing systems fitted.
- New engine installed with all new systems.
- Portholes re-glazed, new windows fitted.

Tilly III is configured as a deck stepped, masthead sloop rig with all spars of anodised alloy construction. Standing rigging is of stainless steel. Genoa and Spinnaker halyards are handled at the the mast. Mainsail halyard, kicker and reefing lines are lead aft to the cockpit on the port and starboard sides of the companionway.

Standing in the cockpit looking forward over the teak laid decks with the varnished coachroof, coamings and silvered teak toerail any skipper can fully appreciated the asthetic appeal of this attractive classic.
A stout stainless steel bow roller secures the CQR anchor in place while the low profile Lofrans electric windlass mounted centrally on the foredeck takes care of retireving chain easily. Stout teak and bronze cleats are located outboard port and starboard for securing mooring lines. Broad side decks run aft from the foredeck the length of the boat to the short section of aft deck. With sturdy solid timber handrails running the length of the coachroof inboard and two tier guard rails outboard crew can securing move around the decks in all weathers.
Rebuilt during the restoration to be of a self draining design the cockpit retains that traditional appearance and is inkeeping with the boat. A slender tiller extends into the aft end of cockpit from the transom hung rudder, the skipper can easily reach both primary winches from the tiller if single or short handed sailing. Timber coaming run the length of the cockpit outboard to provide some protection for crew from the sea spray. Benches run along the port and starboard sides of the cockpit with lockers provided beneath both. The port locker contains the calorifier and various other components of the onboard systems. Storage is provided in the starboard locker. Primary and secondary winchers are mounted on supporting brackets secured to the outboard side of the coaming

Below decks TILLY III oozes quality, the attention given to the interior fit-out and finish detail and quality is evident everywhere you look. With the mast being deck stepped the saloon is not interupted with the bottom end of the spar and this frees up interior space making the boat feel much larger than other classic designs of this era despite her fine hull form forward. Through out the boat the exposed structural timbers, painted white contrast nicely against the richly varnished woodwork and tartan style upholstery. New solid teak soleboards have been fitted throughout, finished in a satin oil for a natural appearance.
The forepeak provides two single berths in the V-berth formation with an infill section creating a double berth if required. The space is open forward to the stemhead with the anchor chain self-stowing through a deck hawse pipe forward. Bin type lockers are provided under the bunks
A compact heads compartment spans the width of the boat immediately aft of the forepeak with doors isolating the space from both the saloon and forepeak. The compartment is appointed with manual sea toilet to port and basin with hot and cold faucet to starboard. The sink faucet is of the type which pulls out for use as a shower head, a teak grating sole allows use of this as a rinse off shower, draining directly to the bilge. Open storage spaces are provided outboard on both port and starboard sides.
With bench settees running the length of the saloon area port and starboard the aft part of the accommodation space feels very cozy with lots of richly varnished woodwork. Overhead lockers outboard provide ample storage space with both settees serving as good sized bunks.
Separated from the saloon by partial bulkheads the compact galley and forward facing nav-station occupy the area immediately in way of the companionway. The linear galley to port has the Taylors paraffin stove at the forward end with a small worktop area aft. A small stainless steel sink is adjacent to the stove with both pressurised and manual faucets, beneath the worktop is a top loading fridge. A small locker is provided under the sink. Opposite the navigator has a forward facing seat with a small chart table, provided within the table is storage for charts and small drawers for cutlery and bosuns gear etc. The ships switch panel and instrumentation are all easily visible from the seating position.

The boat was completely re-wired during the restoration works with all new wiring and components installed on both the 12v and 240v systems.

The engine is located within a fully sound insulated box beneath the companionway. The engine and ancillary systems, including sterngear were all completely replaced with new items during the restoration. The companionway dismantles to provide excellent access around the engine for routine maintenance.

Both battery banks are charged via engine driven alternator or 240V shower power charger. The domestic bank is also connected to the solar panels for trickle charging when on a mooring or at anchor.
